Para estos efectos, el \u00cdndice de Prioridad Social (IPS) es un indicador compuesto que integra aspectos relevantes del desarrollo social comunal, esto es, las dimensiones de: ingresos, educaci\u00f3n y salud. Se trata de un \u00edndice sint\u00e9tico cuyo valor num\u00e9rico permite dimensionar el nivel de desarrollo relativo alcanzado por la poblaci\u00f3n de una comuna. As\u00ed, el valor del IPS obtenido por cada comuna s\u00f3lo se entiende en relaci\u00f3n con los valores de dicho \u00edndice en las restantes comunas. Una ventaja metodol\u00f3gica del IPS es que puede descomponerse en las dimensiones e indicadores que lo conforman, lo cual permite examinar la composici\u00f3n y el efecto de cada uno de ellos en el resultado final. El actual documento constituye una nueva actualizaci\u00f3n de los indicadores del IPS, cuya primera versi\u00f3n se realiz\u00f3 en 1995. La presente versi\u00f3n mantiene la metodolog\u00eda y fuentes de informaci\u00f3n utilizadas en la versi\u00f3n anterior, las cuales son debidamente explicitadas en el
